Commission a Portrait
I am a London-based portrait artist working primarily in oil, with commissions also available in pencil. My work has been exhibited with the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, and featured on Sky Arts TV Series Portrait Artist of the Year. I paint for clients across the UK and internationally, working mainly from carefully selected photographs.
I am particularly drawn to children’s portraits and family paintings as a way of holding onto something fleeting – a look, a softness, a relationship, the shape of a moment that passes quickly. My aim is to create portraits that feel both personal and timeless, capturing likeness, certainly, but also character and connection: the quiet details that allow a painting to endure beyond the photograph.
Why Commission a Portrait
A commissioned portrait is a considered way to celebrate a person, a relationship, or a particular moment in time. Beyond resemblance, a painting can hold presence: the mood of a face, the feeling between people, the quiet details of character that are often sensed rather than documented.
Painted in traditional materials and made with care, a portrait is built to endure. Over time it becomes something lived with and returned to - a personal piece that gathers meaning as years pass, and can quietly become an heirloom.
The Commission Process
Working from photographs
Most commissions are created from photographs. Carefully chosen images with strong lighting and clarity provide the best reference. If you are unsure which photographs may be suitable, you are welcome to send a small selection for consideration, and I am happy to advise.
Discussion and quotation
Following an initial enquiry, we will discuss the portrait’s direction and practicalities - scale, composition, mood, and any particular considerations such as background or multiple subjects. Fees and schedules vary according to these details; as a guide, small head-and-shoulders portraits start from £200, and a portrait of this scale typically takes around three weeks to complete. This is confirmed once I have seen your brief and we have agreed the format.
Agreement and payment
Once you’re satisfied with the proposal, we’ll finalise the details. To secure your commission, a 50% non-refundable booking fee is required to reserve your slot and begin work. The remaining balance is due once the portrait is finished and approved, and before shipping or collection. If you prefer, you’re also welcome to pay in full upfront at the time of booking.
Completion
When the painting is nearing completion, I will share an image for review, and refinements can be made at this stage if required.
Delivery
Finished works are carefully packed and dispatched within the UK or internationally, with shipping arranged according to size and destination.
